What is dementia?
The term “dementia”, covers a number of different forms of illness, which all take a different course, but in the end, they all lead to a severe mental deterioration. Research on the causes has been proceeding for a number of years and many hypotheses have been put forward. The theories range from protein deposits in the brain to circulation problems and metabolic disorders in the nerve cells of the brain. This is the starting point for preventative measures.
Currently around 1.6 million people live with the diagnosis of dementia in Germany. In NRW alone there are around 320,000. The risk of contracting dementia increases with age but it can affect younger people too. But it applies to everyone that the sooner the diagnosis is made, the better it is. Concern over the reactions of others frequently means that the illness remains a taboo subject for too long.
Dementia is a serious illness that turns completely changes normal life. We want people with dementia to continue to participate in life.
